I've heard it said, time and time again, that businesses need to "specialize" or put all of their focus into one thing.
For years my focus has been on weddings. I love the storytelling. The romance. The joy of wedding days.
You know what else I love?
Fitness/Athletes.
Music.
Elegant/Edgy Fashion.
Composites (building images with multiple images -- sports teams/posters, etc. for example).
I love dark/dramatic lighting and bold colors.
Weddings can include these elements...but most don't, and I wouldn't ever expect them to.
So how does one scratch those creative 'itches' if they only focus on one thing? How do people learn about these services if I don't market for them? How do I market for them if I'm supposed to be focusing on one thing? So many questions.
I spent a long time trying to find the perfect answer to this...I still can't answer it with one thing. There's not ONE thing I want to focus all of my energy on. They all get me excited to create.
The beautiful thing about being fulfilled by creativity is I love a good challenge.
Photography has become so much more than a career choice -- it's a mindset. It gives me energy. Each genre has it's own challenge that I love...
Weddings: How do I capture each moment without distracting anyone from it? How can I incorporate each element to enhance those moments, aesthetically - again, without being distracting?
Boudoir: How do I utilize light, angles and movement to highlight everything each model loves about themselves as well as show them how beautiful they are despite all the things they express not liking about themselves?
Fitness: Again, how do I utilize light / shadows / movement to highlight each muscle/curve?
Music: What style of music? How do I represent their style with subtle elements (color / lighting / etc.)? Carley Rae Jepsen should not be photographed the same as Halestorm. ;)
Fashion / Commercial: What's the focus? How do we draw the viewer's eye to the product? How do we make sure the photo represents the style of the designer?
Composites: These have to start with the end in mind. Where will the light source be in the final image? Camera angle? What's the story I want to tell?
I feel like all of these things, when conquered together, play into each other. They all compliment each other. They keep visions and ideas fresh / from getting stagnant.
Some people might flourish being able to focus on ONE thing...I can't. I'll be honest, I get bored. I need to be challenged, creatively.
You have a crazy idea? I want to hear it. Let's brainstorm. Think outside of the box. Be unique. Uniquely YOU....and I'll continue to refuse to focus on ONE thing. lol.
A year ago, I would have been terrified to admit this out loud.
Today, I find it empowering.
Don't ever limit yourself.
Do the things. All the things. Impress yourself. You have one life. Live it.
